Manu Bhaker cherished the “honour of a lifetime” as she represented India at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony along with PR Sreejesh as the country’s flag-bearers.

Bhaker made history in Paris by becoming the first Indian athlete post-Independence and only the second overall to win multiple medals in the same edition of the Olympics. The 22-year-old shooter achieved the feat by winning bronze in the 10m air pistol women’s individual and mixed team events, the latter with Sarabjot Singh.

Veteran hockey goalkeeper Sreejesh was chosen as the male flag-bearer after playing a central role in helping the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team secure a bronze medal for the second consecutive time at the Olympic Games, taking their overall medal count at the world’s biggest multi-sporting event to 13.

Sreejesh announced made his final international appearance in India’s 2-1 victory over Spain in the bronze medal match earlier this week.

In a video shared by JioCinema ahead of the closing ceremony, Bhaker and Sreejesh shared their thoughts on what it meant to be representing the nation at the prestigious event.

“Got this opportunity to carry this flag at the closing ceremony. Fantastic. And Manu, two medals. Great Olympics for her,” Sreejesh said in the video.

“I feel great, and carrying the flag in the closing ceremony would be an honour of a lifetime, and I’ll always cherish this memory,” Bhaker added.

Badminton star PV Sindhu and veteran paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal, who made his fifth and final appearance at the Olympics, were India’s flag-bearers in the unique opening ceremony that had taken place in the form of a boat parade along River Seine and later took place at iconic locations such as the Eiffel Tower and Trocadero Palace.

India collected six medals in Paris 2024, with javelin star Neeraj Chopra (silver) shooter Swapnil Singh (bronze) and wrestler Aman Sehrawat (bronze) the other Indian medallists.

Unlike the opening ceremony though, the Paris Olympics came to a spectacular conclusion with a star-studded closing ceremony at a more traditional venue — Stade de France, Paris’ main Olympic stadium. Hollywood mega-star Tom Cruise was among the celebrities gracing the occasion as IOC chief Thomas Bach declared the Games closed and the Olympic flag was officially passed on to the mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass.
