Manu Bhaker’s historic bronze at the Paris Olympics 2024 will “inspire young athletes across India to dream big,” said Nita Ambani, International Olympic Committee member, and Reliance Foundation chairman, on Sunday. Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian female shooter to win a medal at the Olympics after she won bronze with an effort of 221.7 in the women’s 10m air pistol event.

“What an incredible moment. Our youngest woman shooter has opened India’s tally at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a bronze. Congratulations, Manu Bhaker. As the first Indian woman to win in the 10 m air pistol at the Olympics and our youngest Indian shooter to do so, you’ve made history,” Nita said.

“I’m sure your success today will inspire young athletes across India to dream big and give it their all. Keep the Indian flag flying high. Go India Go make us all proud,” she added.

The bronze medal also marks an incredible comeback for the 22-year-old shooter who failed to reach the final in three events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and also struggled with a gun malfunction in one of the competitions.

Talking about her redemption at the Paris Olympics, Manu Bhaker revealed how the complete focus on the process helped her win the medal.

“Honestly, I read a lot of Gita. So what was going through my mind is just do what you are meant to do. Just do what you are supposed to do and just leave. Whatever the destiny, you can’t control the outcome of it. So in Gita Krishna says to Arjun that, you know, you focus on your karma and not on the outcome of the karma. So only that was running in my head. I was like ‘just do your thing, just do your thing and just let it all be’,” Bhaker told official broadcasters Sports18 after winning bronze.

Bhaker also ended India’s 12-year medal jinx in shooting at the Olympics.

The Haryana shooter said that the Indian shooting contingent will aim for more medals at Paris 2024.

“Well, I feel great. And it was a long-due medal for India. I was merely a medium to do it. India deserves more, even more medals, as many as possible. We are looking forward to as many events as possible this time. And the entire team has worked really hard and personally, for me, the feeling is really surreal,” she said.

Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta also qualified for the 10m air rifle final on Sunday. The finals will take place on Monday.
