Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman shooter to claim an Olympic medal by clinching a bronze in the 10m air pistol event on Sunday (July 28). The triumph opened the country’s account at Paris Olympics and ended a 12-year wait for much-hyped shooters.

India’s last medal in shooting came at London 2012 when rapid-fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar and 10m air rifle marksman Gagan Narang clinched silver and bronze respectively.

Bhaker, 22, who hails from Jhajjar in Haryana, fought hard to get the bronze with a score of 221.7.

Korea’s Kim Yeji claimed the silver with a total of 241.3 while her compatriot Jin Ye Oh bagged the gold with a Games record of 243.2.

Bhaker was competing in her second Olympics after drawing a blank in the previous edition. At Tokyo, she suffered a pistol malfunction and left the venue in tears. Those tears turned to jubilation in Paris on Sunday.
