The Uttar Pradesh government has signed an agreement with Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder for MotoGP - the motorcycling racing championship. The deal will see the race return to the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida for the 2025 season with expectations of it being held in March.

The 2024 race was cancelled due to “operational considerations” with the official word being the September slot was difficult for the drivers, marshals and others involved in the race.

There were other suggestions that the UP govt and the co-promoters Fairstreet Sports couldn’t come up with the money required due to Code of Conduct being in place for the Lok Sabha Elections.

”All payments were being made in between and whatever is left will be paid by next month. So that was not really a factor in shifting the race to next year. We also thought of doing it in November but that would have meant four back-to-back races which would have been tough on the teams and the riders,” Fairstreet Sports CEO Pushkar Nath Srivastava had said in May.

The second edition of MotoGP Bharat was due to take place between 20-22 September this year before being cancelled.

The agreement to keep the race in India was signed between Invest UP, the state’s investment promotion agency, and Dorna Sports.

The state has also formed a high-level executive committee to oversee the entire MotoGP event.

“Bringing MotoGP to Uttar Pradesh not only elevates our state on the global sports stage but also catalyzes substantial economic growth across tourism, hospitality, and associated sectors,” said Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary-cum-Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner, Government of UP.

The inaugural MotoGP Bharat had taken place between 22 and 24 September in 2023, which was won by Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi.

More than 50,000 fans turned up at the Buddh International Circuit during the inaugural race, just enough to fill half of the facility.

Ahead of the 2023 edition, Dorna and Fairstreet Sports had signed a seven-year agreement to keep the race in India. Later, UP govt. became co-promoters of the race in India.
