'Love jihad happens when a girl's marriage is...'

Both Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal were happy and glowing with love. But there are always some people who are sadistic and can’t stand to see somebody happy. Some faceless trolls cropped up and kept abusing the couple for their inter-faith wedding.

Silencing the trolls is veteran actor Mukesh Khanna. In an interview with Filmy Charcha, Khanna said, “Don’t view Sonakshi and Zaheer’s marriage through a Hindu-Muslim lens. What Sonakshi did was not a sudden decision. They have been together for 6-7 years before getting married. People are calling this love jihad. Love jihad happens when a girl’s marriage is forced.”

He added, “Can’t a Hindu and a Muslim marry? Many did so in our time and are happy. This wedding is a family matter for them.”

This is not the first time that trollers have been abusive and toxic. Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, Swara Bhasker and Fahad Ahmad were also trolled for their inter-faith marriage. My question is it was Sonakshi and Zaheer’s personal choice and who are these people having problems with their marriage? Do they even know the couple? Then why so much hate?

The couple chose a civil marriage ceremony over religious rituals.  Sonakshi  and Zaheer were in a relationship for seven years and finally they decided to get married. Some even went to the extent of criticising their wedding attire including the sarees Sonakshi wore for her wedding and pre-wedding functions. It is extremely depressing to see such trolls trying hard to pull down people on such happy occasions.

Zaheer’s father clearly told the media when asked whether Sonakshi will be converting to Islam, “She is not converting, and that is for sure. Theirs is a union of hearts, and religion has no role to play whatsoever. I believe in humanity. God is called Bhagwan by Hindus and Allah by Muslims. But at the end of the day, we are all human beings. My blessings are with Zaheer and Sonakshi.”
