Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion, will put his title defence on the line in the men’s javelin throw final at the Stade de France in Paris on Thursday (August 8).
A gold medal at the end will make Neeraj only the fifth man in Olympic history to defend the javelin title successfully and the first Indian to win two gold medals in an individual event.
Eric Lemming (Sweden; 1908 and 1912), Jonni Myyra (Finland; 1920 and 1924), Jan Zelezny (Czech Republic; 1992, 1996 and 2000) and Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway; 2004 and 2008) are the only ones to have defended their men’s javelin gold medals at an Olympics.
Despite concern over his fitness and form coming into the Paris Olympics, Neeraj threw a thundering 89.34m throw to qualify for the final and topped the standings in the process. It was his season-best and second-best throw of his overall career.
Other athletes to have qualified for the final are: Anderson Peters (88.63m), Julian Weber (87.76m), Arshad Nadeem (86.59m), Julius Yego (85.97m), Mauricio Luiz da Silva (85.91m), Jakub Vadlejch (85.63m), Toni Keranen (85.27m), Andrian Mardare (84.13m), Oliver Helander (83.81m), Keshorn Walcott (83.02m) and Lassi Etelatalo (82.91m).
