It's time to celebrate women desires

Netflix’s Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper Review

Language: Hindi

Director: Puneet Mishra

Cast: Manav Kaul, Tillotama Shome, Shweta Basu Prasad, Sumit Gulati, Faisal Malik and Ashok Pathak

Sex- workers can be male too. We have not seen any movies or series based on male escort services or gigolos in Indian cinema. We have seen actresses playing roles of prostitutes. But here it is the other way round in Netflix’s Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper web series. Its’s the rawness of the story that makes it appealing.

This Netflix series is about a simple, honest man, Tribhuvan Mishra (Manav Kaul ) who is a CA topper, but he works in a government office and finds it difficult to meet up to the needs of the family and then there is a bank fiasco that happens when the poor fellow is completely sunk in debt.  But how does he come out of this situation? Since he is honest, Mishra refuses to take bribes. A dark comedy filled with suspense, the show will truly make you think. One work that Mishra is good at other than being a CA topper is sex and why not use it to pay his debt? Isn’t being a sex worker like any other service industry?

The showrunner of Netflix’s Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper is Puneet Mishra, who created the award-winning series Mirzapur for Amazon Prime. But this series is completely different and most importantly the arc with which he has looked at the sentiments of the escorts is truly praiseworthy. Tribhuvan Mishra as it is tired of being compared to his brother-in-law Shambhu (Sumit Gulati) and Shambu’s seemingly meek wife Shobha (Shweta Basu Prasad) who makes good money by selling insurance.

The show has a Bollywood connection too, especially the nostalgic songs which Bindi played by Tillotama Shome who loves to watch and desires her husband to dance for her like the 90s heroes. Bindi is the wife of the criminal Raja Bhaiya (Shubhrajyoti Barat), a halwai  from Noida who is well known for his savory snacks and jillebis. But that sweet shop is just an eye-wash, his main profession is something else. You will be surprised to know that in the city of Noida, guns are easily available. Every Tom, Dick and Harry possesses a gun and doesn’t think twice to take it out to threaten people and even when they are having a heated conversation.

The giggling of guns, comedy, romance, sadness, Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper is a complete package of entertainment. This intense and completely engaging show is a human story and brings out the different layers in character. Gangsters too have emotions.

If you are viewing the show from the gender arc, the story tells us that as a woman we must celebrate our flaws, vulnerabilities and desires. If your man is unable to keep you happy and doesn’t value your presence or treats you like a piece of furniture, it’s time for you to look for affection outside your marriage. And there is absolutely nothing wrong or immoral about it. Take control of your own life rather than being controlled by your man.  It’s not always men who seek paid sex, women too can ask for it. Not a platonic world for sure, so get ready for that instant orgasm doze!

The beauty of web series is that it allows the characters to evolve from one episode to another. It’s like reading a novel when you move from one chapter to another. And most importantly every character is important whether it is Bindi played by Tillotama Shome or Tribhuvan Mishra played by Manav Kaul. All the performances are simply flawless and relatable. The character played by Shweta Basu Prasad is also very dynamic and how can we forget the nagging mother-in-law played by Yamini Das.  She has actually nailed the role of how annoying a  mother-in-law can be. Faisal Malik as Police Inspector Haider is hilarious. Playing the role of Daicha, is another brillaint Panchayat actor, Ashok Pathak, whom you will hate in the beginning. But has a human side too. One negative point of this show is that it’s a bit too over-stretched with too many sub-plots and backstories, but overall, Netflix’s Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper is a delightful watch!

Rating: 3 and half out of 5
