India’s campaign on the eighth day of competitions at the Paris Olympics ended on a disappointing note with boxer Nishant Dev narrowly losing out on a medal.

Paris Olympics: News, schedule, medals tally and more

The 23-year-old boxer from Karnal, Haryana became the latest Indian to miss out on a medal by a whisker, with shooter Manu Bhaker having narrowly missed out on what would have been an unprecedented third medal for her in the Paris Games.

Besides Nishant and Bhaker, shooter Arjun Babuta and the pair of Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat also finished fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle and mixed team archery events respectively.

Unlike other sports, boxers are awarded bronze medals in the Olympics even if they end up on the losing side in the semi-finals. All Nishant had to do was to win the quarter-final to confirm India’s first non-shooting medal in the Paris Games.

In Nishant’s case, however, there was plenty of outrage on social media after he lost his quarter-final bout against Mexico’s Marco Verde by a split verdict (1-4). And the reactions understandably were primarily from Indian netizens, who Nishant was robbed of a medal by questionable judging.

Here are some of the reactions from microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter):

Devastated is not the word - so
Proud of you Nishant - you have made the entire country proud - this is just the beginning for you and we @IIS_Vijayanagar will leave no effort to
make sure we are ready for that gold in LA. @Paris2024
