Norway Chess: R Praggnanandhaa holds outside chance of winning event after penultimate game

Ding Liren , Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana posted wins in Armageddon games in the ninth and penultimate round of the Norway Chess on Thursday. India’s R Praggnanandhaa still has an mathematical chance of winning the event despite his defeat to Caruana in Armageddon tie-breaker game.

Carlsen, who beat Alireza Firouzja, now leads Hikaru Nakamura - who lost to Ding - by 1.5 points. In the final round on Friday, Carlsen will face Caruana with white, while Nakamura will play R Praggnanandhaa with black pieces.

Praggnanandhaa is third in the Norway Chess standings with 13 points, trailing Carlsen (16) by three points and Nakamura (14.5) by 1.5 points. Firouzja is fourth with 12 points, Caruana fifth on 10.5 and Liren has salvaged some pride late in the tournament with six points.

Praggnanandhaa can only win the Norway Chess title if he beats Nakamura in classical chess for all three points and Carlsen loses to Caruana.

In the Women’s Norway Chess, Lei Tingjie beat R Vaishali in the day’s only classical win. She now faces Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun, who beat Koneru Humpy in Armageddon to lead the tournament by 1.5 points. Anna Muzychuk will be rooting for Lei, since she still has a chance after beating Pia Cramling.
