Not Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan was supposed to be the villain in Yash Chopra's 'Darr', actor says, 'Wouldn't have glamourised the role, it hurts tremendously when…'

Shah Rukh Khan became an overnight sensation and star post the blockbuster success of Darr. But it was Aamir Khan who was supposed to play that villainous role that became a rage and still is. So why did the actor not sign the dotted lines? Way back in 1997, the actor even opened up about the same in an interview.

Aamir said, “In the first narration, he told me that sunny and I would fight, but it was going to be Juhi who would kill me. That would have been poetic justice, but then I came to know that he had narrated a different climax to Sunny in which his character would kill me. So I asked for a joint narration. I was concerned about my screen image. I was totally not going to be beat up by a regular hero in a regular commercial film.”

The actor added, “When Yash Ji told me it was going to be an equal fight between me and Sunny in the climax, I asked him what he meant by that. These were his words said in the presence of cameraman Manmohan Singh and scriptwriter Honey Irani. In any case, it made more sense for the heroine being terrorized all along killing her tormentor. I wouldn’t have glamorized the role the way it was done. The character had a mental problem and should’ve been played accordingly.”

Rift between Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan

Darr is one of the most iconic films of Shah Rukh Khan but Sunny Deol doesn’t have fond memories of that 1993 thriller. He once called it ’the biggest mistake’ due to the ’lies and manipulations.’ In a recent interview, the action director of that film Tinu Verma recalled how Deol ripped his pants in anger as Shah Rukh Khan refused to stab his character in the back.

Verma narrated, “Shah Rukh said I am not Shakti Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Gulshan Grover that I will attack on the back.” He added, “Sunny got so angry eventually that he had his hands in his pocket, and he pushed is hands so hard that his pants tore. Everybody was shocked. Shah Rukh was also there. And then pack-up was announced.”

Verma then revealed he was asked by Yash Chopra to think of a solution so that the shoot could happen. And if one sees that shot again, Deol is looking the other way and Khan suddenly stabs him in his stomach. He truly satiated both the stars’ egos or opinions.

Sunny Deol on Darr

It may have been a blockbuster changing the fortunes of Khan, Deol doesn’t really hold good memories of his filming experience. In an interview with Filmfare back in 2001 post the success of Gadar, Deol spoke about this unpleasant experience and what unfolded on the sets during the making.
