The Olympics mascot embodies the values of a particular edition but they have not always been a regular part of the Games. The first mascot appeared at the 1968 Winter Olympics which took place in Grenoble, France. It was named Shuss and represented a little man on skis.

The first Summer Olympics mascot appeared during the 1972 Munich Games. The mascot was named Waldi. He was a dachshund, a very popular animal in Bavaria. The mascot for Tokyo 2020 was Miraitowa. The name was a combination of the Japanese words “mirai” (future) and “towa” (eternity).

The mascot for the upcoming Paris Games 2024 is Olympic Phryge. It looks like a traditional Phrygian cap. The name and design were chosen as symbols of freedom and to represent allegorical figures of the French republic.
