Since the Modern Olympics began in 1896, numerous sports and disciplines have been part of the Summer Games including the likes of tug of war, live pigeon shooting, pistol duelling and trampoline.

History and legacy of sports are factors in deciding which sport stays and which sport goes out of the Olympic programme. Then there is the popularity of an event at the host city.

At Tokyo Olympics, held three years ago, five new sports were added or brought back: skateboarding, climbing, surfing, karate and baseball/softball.

Of the five, skateboarding, climbing and surfing remained in Paris 2024, but karate and baseball didn’t make the cut for a logner life.

And now, as things move from Paris Olympics to Los Angeles Games, moe sports get continued while others are left to the wayside.

Baseball and softball will re-appear at LA 2028, but breakdancing, which earned plenty of ridicule at the Paris Olympics, won’t.

The only sports that have featured in all editions, from 1896 to 2024, are gymnastics, athletics, cycling, fencing and swimming.

Cricket, squash, flag football, lacrosse, baseball, softball. Of these, cricket was contested only once, at Paris 1900, between two teams. This time, cricket will feature more teams and be played in men’s and women’s T20 disciplines.

Squash and flag football will be Olympic sports for the very first time.

Lacrosse, Baseball and Softball have featured before at the Olympics and will make a re-entry.

Which sports are going to be removed?

Breaking will enjoy a short term as an Olympic sport and will not be contested in Los Angeles.

Boxing has had a long history at the Olympics. It was introduced in 1904 and has been held every edition except 1912 when Swedish law didn’t allow. Since London 2012, it has been both a male and female disciplined event. But with boxing rife with controversy and issues over its governing body, International Boxing Association, the sport may get cut. IOC said the decision on boxing’s fate will be taken next year.
