India will be sending 117 athletes to the Paris Olympics 2024 which will start from 26 July. While more than half the athletes from India will be making their Olympic debut in Paris, multiple athletes featured at Tokyo 2020 and previous Summer Games. As we get closer to the world’s biggest sporting event, we break down the Indian contingent and present the most interesting facts about it.

117: This is India’s second-largest contingent for an Olympic Games after Tokyo 2020 in which 121 athletes participated. The biggest miss is the Indian women’s hockey team who have failed to qualify for Paris 2024.

72: Over 61% of the Indian contingent will be making the Olympics debut in Paris. That is 72 athletes.

70 and 40: The Indian contingent for the Paris Olympics includes 70 male and 47 women athletes.

29: Athletics will send the biggest contingent of 29 athletes including two reserves from India to the Paris Olympics followed by shooting (21). This is the first time Indian shooters have clinched quota in each category and it’s the largest-ever shooting contingent from the country. 19 players are part of the Indian men’s hockey team followed by eight in table tennis and seven in badminton. Wrestling, archery, and boxing will have six athletes each, followed by golf (4), tennis (3), swimming (2), and sailing (2). Equestrian, judo, rowing, and weightlifting will have one athlete each.

24: Haryana will have the biggest representation at Paris Olympics with 24 athletes from that state followed by Punjab (19), Tamil Nadu (13), Karnataka (7), Uttar Pradesh (7), Kerala (6), Maharashtra (5), Delhi (4), Andhra Pradesh (4), Telangana (4), Uttarakhand (4), West Bengal (3), Madhya Pradesh (2), Manipur (2), Odisha (2), Rajasthan (2), Gujarat (2), Chandigarh (2), Bihar (1), Assam (1), Sikkim (1), Jharkhand (1) and Goa (1).

16: The 117 Indian athletes will take part in 16 sports disciplines at the Paris Olympics.

5: The Indian contingent includes five former medal winners – Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain, and the men’s hockey team.

2: Parul Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker are the only Indians who will take part in more than one individual event at the Paris Olympics. Parul will take part in women’s 5000m run and 3000m steeplechase events, while Manu has been picked for the women’s 10m air pistol, 10m air pistol mixed team, and 25m pistol shooting events.

Oldest Indian athlete at the Paris Olympics: Tennis Rohan Bopanna (44) will be the oldest Indian athlete at the Paris Olympics followed by table tennis player Sharath Kamal (42).
