Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat made an impressive start to his debut Olympics campaign at the Paris 2024 as he stormed into the men’s 57kg freestyle semi-finals on Thursday by beating former world champions Zelimkhan Abakarov by technical superiority (12-0).

Earlier in the day he had defeated North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov also by technical superiority (10-0).

Anshu Malik, however, lost her women’s 57kg freestyle first round match against Helen Maroulis 7-2. Anshu’s bronze medal chances through the Repechage round also were dashed when Maroulis lost in the semi-final.

In the quarter-finals, Sehrawat pulled off an incredible move by locking Abakarov’s legs and rolling him multiple times on the mat to win the match in a quick time.

In the pre-quarters, the 21-year-old Aman, an Asian Championship gold medallist and the only male wrestler from the country to qualify for the Olympics was amazingly agile as he kept his defence intact while regularly overpowering his 29-year-old former European champion with leg holds to win the bout on technical superiority (10-0).

Egorov seemed to be in a bit of bother after the first round, requiring medical attention on his knee following Aman’s all-out attack.
