The athletics competitions in the Paris Olympics had begun with the road walk events on 1 August, and witnessed two of the showpiece events, the men’s and women’s 100-metre sprints, take place over the weekend with USA’s Noah Lyles and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred crowned the world’s fastest man and woman respectively.

The Indian athletics contingent however, is yet to make a major impact so far in the Paris Games. None of the road walk athletes, including national record holder Priyanka Goswami, impressed on the opening day.

Day 2 of the athletics competitions would witness distance runners Parul Chaudhary and Ankita Dhyani fail to qualify for the finals of the women’s 5000m and Tajinderpal Singh Toor coming up with the lowest score among 29 competitors in the men’s shot put qualifying.

Chaudhary would fail to qualify for the final of her pet event — the 3,000m steeplechase — on Sunday after finishing eighth in her heat. On the same day, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin would register a best leap of 7.61m that secured him a 13th place finish in Group B.
