Badminton, a racket sport with mysterious origins, emerged from the games of battledore and shuttlecock, popular among the wealthy in Europe.

Though the exact transition to its competitive nature remains unknown, a credible theory suggests it began at the Duke of Beaufort’s Badminton House in the 1860s.

From there, it journeyed to India, where it gained popularity in military posts, spreading to British colonies, Europe, and East Asia. Today, badminton is a global sport enjoyed by people of various ages and skill levels.

What are the rules of badminton?

In badminton, players engage in indoor matches, either singles or doubles, separated by a net. Using a shuttlecock, players aim to land it in the opponent’s court or induce errors.

Each serve scores a point, with a match won by securing two games of 21 points (best of three). At 20-20, one person/team has to take a gap of two points to win a game.

The sport is divided into men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles disciplines.

What is badminton’s history at Olympics?

The sport’s Olympic history began as a demonstration event at the 1972 Munich Olympics and evolved into an official event at Barcelona 1992, featuring men’s and women’s singles/doubles. Mixed doubles joined in Atlanta 1996.

Dominated by Asian nations, badminton has seen 106 Asian athletes claim Olympic medals out of 121.

Paris 2024 will host 172 athletes competing across different categories over ten days, with medals awarded for each event.
