The term “Hockey” originates from the French word “hocquet”, which means a shepherd’s crook in reference to the curved shape of a hockey stick. The history of the sport dates back to ancient times, with early forms of the game being played in Egypt around 4,000 years ago, and variations appearing in what is now Ethiopia (1000 BC) and Iran (2000 BC).

Numerous museums suggest that the game was also enjoyed by the Romans, Greeks, and Aztecs in varying forms. Modern hockey as we know it began to take shape in England during the mid-19th century, with the establishment of the Hockey Association in 1886 to standardise the game’s rules.

Emphasising gender parity, hockey boasts 30 million players worldwide, with 51% being women and 49% men. The core aspects of hockey include speed, technical skills, and enjoyment, requiring endurance and strong coordination.

What are the rules of hockey?

A typical hockey match comprises four periods of 15 minutes each, totalling 60 minutes.

Each team consists of eleven players, including a goalkeeper, fullbacks, midfielders, and forwards.

Substitutions are allowed at any time, and teams can opt to play without a goalkeeper temporarily. The objective is to score goals, and in case of a tied score in Olympic pool matches, the game ends in a draw, while knockout games are settled by penalty shoot-outs.

Originally played on natural grass, field hockey transitioned to synthetic turf for faster-paced gameplay. The field is watered to increase ball speed. Players use hooked sticks to maneuver and strike a hard ball, with only the flat side of the stick permitted for contact.

Touching the ball with hands or feet (except for goalkeepers) results in penalties like green, yellow, or red cards.
