India are set to begin their Paris Olympics 2024 campaign on 25 July with the ranking round in archery. The 33rd edition of the Summer Olympic Games will officially start on 26 July with a grand opening ceremony on the River Seine in Paris. This time India are sending a 117-member strong contingent which is slightly smaller than the 121-athlete contingent that took part in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

The 121-member contingent was India’s biggest ever for a Summer Olympics and the biggest miss for India this time will be the Indian women’s hockey team.

How did India perform at Tokyo 2024?

The Indian contingent of 121 athletes comprised 67 male and 52 female participants. Overall, India had a record-breaking Games winning seven medals – the highest ever with Neeraj Chopra winning India’s first gold in athletics (javelin throw). It was also India’s second individual medal in the Olympics after Abhibnav Bindra’s shooting top prize in the Beijing Olympics 2008.

Heartbreaks

India also came close in several other events, missing out on the medals by a whisker.

The Indian women’s hockey team lost to Great Britain 4-3 in the bronze medal match while Aditi Ashok finished fourth in the women’s golf.

What has changed?

-- For starters, 117 athletes will be going to Paris Games including 70 male and 47 female athletes. Female participation has come down due to the lack of the Indian women’s hockey team.

-- They will be taking part in 16 sports as compared to 18 in Tokyo.

-- Two medallists from Tokyo are missing – Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia. Only one male wrestler has qualified for the Paris Olympics. There were three male wrestlers from India in Tokyo.

-- Five female wrestlers are going to Paris from India, which is a record.

-- Reetika Hooda is the first Indian female wrestler to qualify in 76kg event.

-- Jyothi Yarraji is set to become the first Indian to take part in women’s 100m hurdles event.

-- The shooting contingent also comprises 21 athletes – the highest ever after 15 in Tokyo.

-- The Indin contingent includes 72 athletes who are going to make their Olympic debuts.

-- The sports ministry has spent over Rs 470 crore through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) on athletes for the Paris Games. There’s no confirmation but it is expected to be significantly higher than the spending before Tokyo 2020.
