Indian archers were off to a promising start in the Paris Olympics with men’s as well as women’s recurve teams directly qualifying for the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The women’s team entered the quarters after finishing fourth in the ranking round with a combined score of 1983.

Ankita Bhakat finished 11th overall in the individual ranking round with a season-best score of 666 out of 720. Bhajan Kaur finished 22nd with a score of 659 followed by Deepika Kumari at 23rd (658).

Later on Thursday, the men’s team qualified for the quarter-finals by finishing third in the ranking round with a total of 2,013 points.

Dhiraj Bommadevara led the way with a fourth-place finish after accumulating 681 points while Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav finished 14th and 39th with 674 and 658 points respectively.

The trio of Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav have done a superb job by finishing in 3rd place, with a total score of 2013!

Bhakat and Bommadevara also finished in the fifth place in the mixed team rankings with a combined score of 1,347 points, and will now face Indonesia in the pre-quarter-finals.

In the women’s section, Korea’s Lim Sihyeon and Nam Suhyeon finished first and second in the individual ranking round with scores of 694 and 688 respectively. Lim Sihyeon’s score of 694 is the new world record.

Xiaolei Yang of China finished third with a score of 673.

South Korea topped the team ranking with a score of 2,046 which is the new Olympic record. The Koreans also pulled off an Olympic record in the mixed team ranks with a combined 1,380 points.

The third member of the Korean team – Jeon Hunyoung scored 664.

China (1996) and Mexico (1986) took the second and third spots respectively in the team rankings.

India are scheduled to play either France or the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the women’s recurve team archery event.

South Korea also led the way in the men’s team standings, finishing at the top with 2,049 points. France finished second with 2,025 points — 12 more than the third-placed India — while China finished fourth with 1,998 points.

India face the winner of the pre-quarter-final clash between Turkiye and Colombia in their next outing.

The duo of Bhakat and Bommadevara, meanwhile, face Indonesia’s Arif Pangestu and Diananda Choirunisa in the mixed team pre-quarter-final clash on 2 August.

The women’s team events, including the bronze and gold medal matches will take place on Sunday, 28 July with the men’s events taking place the following day.

Each archer shoots a total of 72 arrows during the ranking round, which features 128 competitors. The final score determines the seeding for the men’s and women’s individual events.

The seeding for the men’s and women’s team events is determined on the basis of the final combined scores of the individual competitors. Teams that finish in the top four directly qualify for the quarter-finals while teams placed between fifth and 12th compete in the pre-quarters.

The mixed team seedings for a nation is determined on the basis of the combination of top scores from the men’s and women’s teams. Only the top 16 pairs qualify for the next round.

The archery competition is taking place in the lawns of the Invalides, France’s military museum which also happens to be the final resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte.
