Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain’s Paris Olympics 2024 campaign came to an end on Sunday after a narrow defeat to number one seed Li Qian in the women’s 75kg quarter-finals. The Chinese boxer, who defeated Lovlina in the Asian Games final last year, won the contest by a 4-1 split decision.

A victory on Sunday would have assured another Olympic medal for Lovlina as the semi-finalists in the Summer Games are awarded at least a bronze but it was not as the top seed edged the cagey contest by proving to be more aggressive than the Indian boxer.

Li Qian won the first round by a split decision of 3-2 and repeated the same score after the second round. But Lovlina managed to stay in the contest with four of the five judges tied on points before the final round. However, the Chinese boxer upped the ante in the third round and secured a 4-1 score, eventually winning the bout by the same margin.
