Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh stormed into the 10m air pistol mixed team medal match on Monday in the Paris Olympics 2024, while rifle shooter Arjun Babuta missed out on a medal by a whisker and Ramita Jindal finished seventh in the final.

Manu Bhaker, who won India’s first medal of the ongoing Games on Sunday, and Sarabjot reached the bronze medal match by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 580. Only the top four pairs from the pistol mixed team qualification advance to the medal matches. The top two qualify for the gold/silver match, while the third and fourth pairs take part in the bronze medal match.

India’s Rhythm Sangwan and Arjun Singh Cheema failed to qualify for the medal match after finishing 10th with a score of 576.

Bhaker and Sarabjot will take on South Korea’s Jin Ye Oh and Wonho Lee who finished fourth with a score of 579.

Turkey’s Ilayda Sevval Tarhan-Yusuf Dikec (582) and Serbia’s Zorana Arunovic-Damir Mikec (581) will take part in the gold/silver match.

Babuta finishes fourth

The men’s 10m air rifle shooter, Babuta, came agonisingly close to a medal before finishing fourth in the final. The Indian shooter finished with a total score of 208.4. Hitting a 9.5 on his last shot went against the 25-year-old when the Indian needed a minimum of 10.5.

China’s Sheng Lihao won the gold in the event with an Olympic record of 252.2, while Sweden’s Victor Lindgren took the silver medal with a score of 251.4 and Croatia’s Miran Maricic (230) clinched the bronze.

Ramita goes down in air rifle final

Ramita missed out on a medal after she bowed out of the women’s 10m air rifle final in the seventh spot. The 20-year-old Indian was the second shooter to be eliminated in the final with a score of 145.3.

The gold was won by Hyojin Ban of South Korea after a shoot-off win over China’s Yuting Huang. Both shooters equalled Qian Yang’s (China) Olympic record of 251.8 from Tokyo 2020, leading to a shoot-off in which Ban shot a 10.4 to win gold while Huang posted 10.3 to clinch silver.

The bronze was won by Swiss Audrey Gogniaat with a score of 230.3.

Tough day for Tondaiman in trap qualification

India’s Prithviraj Tondaiman was ranked 30th after the end of the first day in the men’s trap qualification round. On his debut Tondaiman, 37, picked up scores of 22, 25 and 21. He clinched the perfect score in the second round but missed his mark thrice in the first round and four times in the second.

The qualification round will resume on Tuesday for the final two rounds.
