India endured a disappointing day at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday. Shooter Manu Bhaker, who has two Olympic medals to her name, missed out on a podium finish in the women’s 25m pistol final. Archers Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur suffered exits in the women’s individual archery event.

There was more disappointment in boxing as young Nishant Dev suffered a split decision defeat to Mexico’s Marco Verde. Nishant was one win away from confirming India another medal, but fell short of achieving that in his maiden Olympics appearance.

Manu Bhaker misses medal

Indian shooter Manu Bhaker had been tipped to go all the way and win the gold in the women’s 25m Pistol event, after having won bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol and the mixed team 10m air pistol competitions. Another medal for Bhaker, however, was not meant to be, as she finished fourth in the women’s 25m pistol final with a total score of 28.

At one time during the final, Bhaker was tied for third place along with Hungary’s Veronika Major, but the Indian lost a couple of points in the shoot-off to eventually surrender the podium finish to the Hungarian.

In the shoot-off that consists of five attempts, Manu clinched three accurate shots, but her Hungarian opponent had one more (Four accurate shots) compared to Manu.

Manu, however, has already made history by becoming the first Indian athlete in independent India to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympic Games.

On the second day of the men’s skeet qualification, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka finished with a score of 116 to be placed 24th, thus failing to secure qualification.

On the opening day of the women’s skeet qualification, Maheshwari Chauhan (Eighth, score of 71) and Raiza Dhillon (24th, score of 66) were in action for India.

Nishant Dev had emerged as a medal contender following his victory over Ecuador’s Jose Rodriguez in the men’s 71 kg boxing pre-quarterfinals. And although he did not come into the quarter-final match against Mexico’s Marco Verde as a favourite, there was still some hope of Nishant qualifying for the semi-finals.

Nishant was off to a bright start in the contest, winning the first round 4-1. But, as the bout progressed, the 23 year-old starting facing several aggressive blows from the Mexican, that eventually led to the latter’s split decision victory.

In archery, the experienced Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur suffered exits. While Deepika fought valiantly before going down to South Korea’s Nam Su-Hyeon 4-6 in the quarter-finals, Bhajan lost to Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa 5-6 in the round of 16 clash. This marked the end of India’s arhery campaign at the Paris Olympics.

In the third round of men’s individual stroke-play in golf, Shubhankar Sharma was tied 34th whereas Gaganjeet Bhullar was tied 48th.

In sailing, after the fifth and sixth races of the men’s dinghy opening series, Vishnu Saravanan was in 23rd place with 83 net points (Total points of 117). In the women’s series, Nethra Kumaran was ranked 24th following six races. She has 96 net points and 124 points overall.
