India added another medal to the medals tally on the fourth day of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday. Shooter Manu Bhaker, who had earlier won a historic bronze in the women’s 10m Air Pistol event, teamed up with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event and the duo eventually clinched bronze medal.

It was, however, a disappointing outing for the Indian boxers, with Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboria and Preet Pawar all bowing out in their respective bouts. Archer Dhiraj Bommadevara reached the 1/16 elimination round of the men’s individual archery event, but suffered a narrow defeat that knocked him out.

In badminton, the Satwik-Chirag pair, who are in the quarter-finals, continued their winning run as they beat Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian of Indonesia. However, it was curtains down for the women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Castro, who suffered a third straight loss to exit from the Paris Olympics.

Manu-Sarabjot pair shines in shooting

It was a double delight for young Indian shooter Manu Bhaker as she clinched another bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. This time, it was in the mixed team 10m Air Pistol competition, where she was paired with Sarabjot Singh. The duo had entered the bronze medal match after finishing third in qualification round, and took on South Korea’s Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho, who finished fourth.

While Manu began the match with a score of 10.2, Sarabjot was off to a worrisome start after he managed just 8.6 in his first attempt. However, the latter soon found his rhythm with consistent shots of 10 and more. His highest was 10.5, which he achieved in the second and ninth rounds. Manu complimented his efforts with her own level of consistency, registering her highest score of 10.7 in the second and fourth rounds.

From 0-2 down at one stage, the Indian duo scripted a commendable comeback to take an 8-2 lead and then later a 10-4 lead. Even with India’s lead at 14-6, the Korean duo kept bouncing back, but in the end, the Indians were too strong as they finished with a final attempt of 19.6.

Bhaker thus created history, becoming the first Indian athlete in independent India to win two medals at a single edition of the Olympics.

It was, however, all over for Prithviraj Tondaiman as he finished in 21st men in the men’s trap shooting qualification with just 118 points.

On the first day of the women’s trap shooting qualification, Rajeshwari Kumar and Shreyasi Singh (Both 68 points) were in 21st and 22nd places respectively.

Disappointing day for Indian boxers; Heartbreak for Dhiraj

A lot was expected from India’s boxers in the lead-up to the Olympics, but instead, three of those boxers ended up having a disappointing day. Amit Panghal (51 kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57 kg) and Preeti Pawar (54 kg) were all in action on Tuesday. Panghal, playing in round of 16 against Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia, struggled with counter-attacking skills and footwork, before eventually going down 1-4.

Jasmine Lamboria lost her last 32 bout to Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio via a unanimous decision, whereas Preeti, in her last 16 bout against Yeni Aras of Colombia, gave some fight in the second round before suffering a 2-3 loss.

In archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara made the 1/16 elimination round of the men’s individual competition, but suffered a narrow 5-6 defeat to Canada’s Evan Peters. In the women’s competition, Ankita Bhakat made an early exit whereas Bhajan Kaur made the pre-quarterfinals.

India men’s hockey team in quarter-finals

The India men’s hockey team defeated Ireland 2-0 in their third match to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Olympics. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh netted a brace, with his first and second goals coming in the 11th and 19th minutes.

India were dominant in terms of circle penetrations but Ireland scripted somewhat of a fightback in the third quarter, as they won as many as eight penalty corners in five minutes. However, surpassing PR Sreejesh was always going to be a big task. The win means India have seven points from three matches, including two wins and a draw.

Along with India, Belgium, who beat Australia 6-2 on Tuesday, have also qualified for the last eight from Pool B.

Satwik-Chirag sign off group stage with win; Ashwini-Tanisha out

The pair of Stawiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had already qualified for the quarter-finals, and their final group match against Indonesian pair of Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian was merely a dead rubber. The Indian duo emerged victorious with a 21-13, 21-13 win that was a clinical one.

For the women’s pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Castro, it was anything but clinical. They lost to Australia’s pair of Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu with a 15-21, 10-21 scoreline in their final group match. The defeat was the duo’s third in the group stage which meant they end the tournament without a single win.
