Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen’s Paris Olympics 2024 campaign ended with a shock loss on Thursday as she went down to Asian Games gold-medallist Wu Yu of China. The 50kg boxer failed to find her rhythm in the Round of 16 bout as she lost by a 5-0 verdict against her.

Wu Yu is also the top seed in the women’s 50kg category.

One of the medal favourites from India, Nikhat qualified for the Round of 16 match by beating Germany’s Maxi Karina Kloetzer in her opening round.

Wu Yu, the reigning flyweight (52kg) world champion, had received a bye in the opening round.

Four out of six Indian boxers have already been eliminated from the Paris Olympics so far. Amit Panghal and Preeti Pawar lost in the round of 16, while Jaismine Lamboria exited in the round of 32.

Tokyo 2020 medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Nishant Dev are still in contention after reaching their respective quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Nishant faces second-seeded Marco Verde of Mexico on Saturday, while Borgohain will be up against top seed Li Qian of China on Sunday.
