Trap shooter Shreyasi Singh was officially named as part of the final 21-member Indian shooting squad for the Paris Olympics on Friday, following a quota swap approved by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), the governing body of the sport.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirmed the development after receiving permission from ISSF to exchange a quota spot, allowing for Shreyasi’s inclusion in the team.

This decision came about as Manu Bhaker had secured top positions in both air pistol and sports pistol events, prompting the reallocation of a quota place to a female trap shooter.

Shreyasi, a 32-year-old trap shooter who is also active in politics with the BJP, representing the Jamui constituency in the Bihar Assembly, will compete in the women’s trap event alongside Rajeshwari Kumari.

Sultan Singh, the secretary general of NRAI, stated, “We had requested the ISSF to change one quota place from 10m air pistol women to trap women and have received correspondence from them that it has been accepted.

“As a result, Shreyasi Singh has now been added to the original list of 20 names published and we will have a full quota of two starts in the women’s trap event.”

The team composition now consists of eight members in rifle disciplines, seven in pistol categories, and six in the shotgun discipline.

When taking into account the mixed events, the team will have 28 starting opportunities at the upcoming Paris Olympics scheduled from 26 July to 11 August.

Indian shooters last clinched Olympic medals in the 2012 London Games, with Vijay Kumar (silver) and Gagan Narang (bronze) standing on the podium following Abhinav Bindra’s historic gold-winning performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
