Just a day after Vinesh Phogal lost her appeal for a joint silver at the Paris Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian wrestler for creating history at the Summer Games and making the country proud. Vinesh had appealed for a joint silver at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) after her disqualification for failing to make weight by just 100 grams on the day of her 50kg gold medal match. The appeal was dismissed by the sports tribunal on Wednesday.

PM Modi, during his interaction with the Indian Olympic contingent at his residence in Delhi on Independence Day, said that Vinesh becoming the first female wrestler from India to reach the final at the Olympics was a “moment of great pride” for the country.

“Vinesh became the first Indian to reach the wrestling finals. It is a moment of great pride for us,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also shared a message for the Indian athletes who returned empty-handed from the Paris Olympics. He said nobody loses in sports and there’s always something to learn.

“First of all, those who have lost should take this out of their mind that they have lost. You have held the national flag high and you have learnt something. That’s why, sport is the only field where nobody loses,” said PM Modi.

India won six medals at Paris Olympics including one silver and five bronze.

They had sent a 117-member string contingent which included 47 female athletes. Besides six medals, India also registered six fourth-place finishes as star athletes like PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu missed out on medals.
