Sourav Ganguly missing as sports stars hit streets in protest over Kolkata doctor’s rape-murder

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly did not attend the protest against the rape-murder of a Kolkata trainee doctor on Wednesday. PTI

Sports fans and former sportspersons took to the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday, protesting against the gruesome rape-murder of a female Kolkata doctor. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, however, did not participate in the protest. Ganguly, is however, likely to join the protests in the evening with his wife.

Former Asian Games silver medallist Soma Biswas, former swimmer Bula Choudhury and chess grandmaster Dibyendu Barua were among the prominent sportspersons who attended the protest, seeking justice for the trainee doctor.

Bula Choudhury said that while she has travelled to several countries where she has felt secured, she was feeling insecure in her own country. “I have been to so many countries , I have never felt so insecure, but today in my own city, I am feeling insecure,” she told CNN News18.

On 9 August, a 31 year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where she was working. This sparked outrage among the public in Kolkata, with doctors leading protests while demanding justice. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital and a key suspect of the case, was arrested last week.

It has been reported that Sanjay Roy had visited the red light area on 8 August night. He reportedly consumed alcohol that night and went to a couple of brothels.

On Sunday evening, supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan joined hands and had gathered near the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata to protest against the crime. The Durand Cup match between the two sides which was to take place on 18 August at the Salt Lake Stadium, was abandoned due to security concerns. Both teams shared a point each and secured their berth in the quarter-finals.
