Table tennis star Sreeja Akula is set to miss the upcoming season of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) due to a stress fracture.

The 26-year-old, currently the highest-ranked Indian in World Table Tennis (WTT) rankings at 22nd, was set to represent Jaipur Patriots in the the fifth season of UTT, which takes place in Chennai from 22 August to 7 September.

The two-time national champion Sreeja was slated to play for Jaipur Patriots but in a statement released on Monday, the 26-year-old informed that she will need a recuperating period of six weeks.

“I am sorry to share that I have been diagnosed with a stress fracture and on my doctor’s advice, I will need to rest for six weeks, which unfortunately means (that) I will not be able to participate in the UTT,” she said.

Sreeja has been replaced by U-19 Youth National Champion Nithyashree Mani.

Sreeja had recently made her maiden Olympic appearance in Paris, where she went as far as the Round of 16 in the individual section along with star paddler Manika Batra and also helped India reach the women’s team Round of 16.

Sreeja and Batra thus became the first Indians to reach the third round in the Olympic table tennis event. India also debuted in the men’s and women’s table tennis team events, winning their opening match in the latter.
