The GIFT Nifty index, around 8:30 am on Wednesday, was down 58 points or 0.25 per cent at 23,291. The index hinted at a flat start for the stock market in India today. The India VIX index, an indicator of volatility on Dalal Street, however, was down 1.63 points or 9.96 per cent at 14.76 levels.

These mixed cues are somewhat aligned with the global markets. In the United States, the share market closed on a mixed note, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 noting record highs, but Dow Jones dipping in the red. Asian stocks were mixed, too.
