Actor-politician Sumalatha Ambareesh has finally reacted to Kannada star Darshan Thoogudeepa’s arrest in the murder case of his fan Renukaswamy. On a long note, she wrote about his bond with the actor and said Darshan is like a son to her.

Addressing the criticism for staying mum since Darshan’s arrest, Sumalatha said, “You do not understand the bond between my family and Darshan’s family. I have known him for 25 years, even before he became a star. Beyond his stardom, Darshan is like a family member to me, like a son. He always referred to Ambareesh as his father and gave me a special place in his life. No mother likes to see her son in such a situation.”

Saying that Darshan won’t commit a crime like murder, she added, “I know Darshan as a man with a loving and generous heart. His compassion for animals and willingness to help those in need testify to his character. I believe Darshan is not the type of person to commit such a crime.”

Darshan is still an accused; nothing has been proven against him, nor has he been punished. Let Darshan get a fair trial,” Sumalatha

A total of 17 people, including Darshan and his friend Pavithra Gowda, are accused in the alleged killing of Renukaswamy. According to police sources, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, had sent obscene messages to Gowda, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli here on June 9.

Technical investigation and CCTV footage proved that Darshan and Pavithra were there at the crime scene on the intervening night of 8 and 9 June.

It was also disclosed that between 11 pm and 3.30 am, Darshan’s mobile number was discovered at the crime scene’s mobile network area.
