'Was strange to see people clapping, would have said yes to the film if…'

Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023 with more than Rs 500 crore at the box-office. However, the narrative of the film and Kapoor’s character still continues to be debated. The latest actress to talk about it is Taapsee Pannu. She opened up in her interview with Expresso and said she found strange to see people clapping at certain scenes of the film.

Pannu also said, “ If I would have read the script of Animal, I would have been equally excited as Ranbir Kapoor… But, the difference is… when you read a script and when you see what you see, it is the director’s medium. When I am reading a script, I don’t know which shot he is putting low angle and high BGM on… I can’t see that through script.”

She added, “It is only the director who can communicate that with the shot-taking and with the post-production. You conceive a certain scene and shot. Heroism, or how you celebrate (a character, depends on how the scene is shot), it will not be on paper.”

On her dark character in Badla

Nowhere in the entire film you will see them celebrating my darkness,” she said, adding, “Now, that’s where director’s politics comes in. That’s why it is a director’s medium which no actor can read when they are reading the script.”

From the pre-teaser to the trailer

For the first time ever, the audiences witnessed a ‘Pre-Teaser’ of a film which left the nation stunned. The team then released teaser of the film followed by the blockbuster song ‘Satranga’ and then we saw a once in a lifetime moment. Ranbir Kapoor’s surprise visit on Arijit Singh’s concert while he sang the song was truly a moment to remember. Furthermore, utilizing cricket fervour, a special collaboration of Ranbir Kapoor during a World Cup match garnered attention, seamlessly integrating ‘Animal ’ into the sports spectacle.

Domestically, exclusive previews of the trailer for the Mumbai press was followed by a grand trailer launch in Delhi generated industry buzz. A strategic album launch with Spotify and a three-city tour in the South, culminating in a pre-release event in Hyderabad with regional stars, tapped into diverse markets.
