Vinesh Phogat CAS verdict LIVE: Why the delay in verdict?

Initially, CAS said the verdict would be announced before the Games close on August 11. Then, on Saturday (August 10), IOA said that the verdict had been delayed. The shambolic communication aside, it was made clear that the decision would be pronounced before August 13 9:30pm IST.

Why are there delays in hearing and now verdict? As per CAS regulations, the ad-hoc panel is due to deliver a verdict within 24 hours from the conclusion of the hearing. In Vinesh’s case, though, it has breached that time limit.

However CAS regulations also state that in ’exceptional cases’, this time limit may be extended.

Vinesh Phogat CAS verdict LIVE: Did UWW not follow their own rules?

As per UWW rules, the person who claims the repechage is the one who loses to the finalists. So, in women’s 50kg freestyle, Yui Susaki was given the chance to fight for the bronze medal in the repechage. As per rules though, since Vinesh was disqualified, she had finished bottom of the standings.

The final took place between Yusneylys Guzman of Cuba, who Vinesh beat in the semi-finals, and Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA. On what basis was Susaki allowed to compete in repechage if Vinesh didn’t reach the final.

Akaash Dasgupta writes: “Many in the international wrestling fraternity have come forward to support Vinesh, with many asking for a rule change, the reality is that the one who is and will be hurting the most is Vinesh herself and this is not something that will hurt for a while and then go away. She will have to find immense inner strength to overcome this heartbreak. This was her third Olympic Games and she is on the threshold of turning 30.”

“Vinesh’s emotional statement on social media that sounded very much like a formal retirement announcement was painful, but not surprising. Some times the resolve to keep fighting hits a dangerously low point. Maybe she will reconsider in some time and decide to return to competitive wrestling.”

Vinesh Phogat CAS verdict LIVE: What did CAS say on the Vinesh case?

In the only official documentation from the appeal, CAS had said on the case: “An application was filed at the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her, because of her failed second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence at 18:15 CEST the same day (the Challenged Decision),” the statement from the CAS read.

“The Applicant initially sought a decision from the CAS Ad hoc Division annulling the Challenged Decision and ordering another weigh-in before the final match as well as a declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final.

“However, she did not request urgent interim measures. The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and that she requests to be awarded a (shared) silver medal.”

“The matter has been referred to the Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS), sitting as a Sole Arbitrator, who will hold a hearing with the parties today. The Sole Arbitrator’s decision is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games.”
