The Court of Arbitration for Sports’ (CAS) decision on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal at the Paris Olympics is expected to come out today (10 August, Saturday) by 9.30 PM IST (6 PM local time). After CAS accepted Vinesh’s appeal against her disqualification from the Olympics for failing the weigh-in by just 100 grams and losing out on a medal, the arguments in the matter concluded on Friday (9 August) in front of the ad-hoc division after a three-hour hearing.

“Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules form the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time limit for the Panel to give a decision until 10 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time),” a statement from the CAS read.

The CAS had earlier stated that the ad-hoc division would five the decision before the end of the Paris 2024 which ends on 11 August.

Vinesh presented her case during the CS hearing virtually and was also represented by senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania. The CAS hearing was conducted by Dr Annabelle Bennett from Australia, who served as the Sole Arbitrator.

During the hearing, the Indian wrestler demanded a joint silver as she failed the weigh-in on the day of the gold medal match with Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA, but was eligible on the first day of her women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling competition when she defeated Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to reach the final.
