Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medallist, has an interesting take on his father-in-law gifting him a buffalo for his achievement. Arshad made history at the Paris Olympics this month when he recorded a throw measuring 92.97 metres to win the gold medal in the men’s javelin event.

After Nadeem’s success in Paris 2024, his father-in-law gifted him a buffalo, saying it is considered a “very valuable” and “honourable” gift in their village.

Nadeem, who hails from the rural area of Khanewal in Punjab, was recently asked about the unique gift in an interview. The Olympic gold medallist came up with a hilarious response to the question.

“She was the one who told me and I said ‘buffalo’? He could have given me five acres of land. But then I said ok fine, he gave me a buffalo, that is also nice,” Nadeem said on ARY News.

Nadeem added that his wife found out about the gift through media reports.

“She learned about it through some interviews, and she came and told me about it. I said, ’ A buffalo? By God’s grace, he is so rich, and he gave a buffalo?’” Nadeem added.

The Olympic champion has been showered with huge prize money and several gifts since winning the gold in Paris.

He has received a total of 250 million rupees ($897,000) in prize money from different government officials and private entities including 150 million rupees ($538,000) from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Nadeem also received a brand new Honda Civic car with a special number plate of “PAK 92.97” from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
