An emotional Vinesh Phogat returned to India from Paris on Saturday morning following a heartbreaking campaign at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics. Vinesh could not hold back her tears as she received a rousing reception in New Delhi after she landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday morning.

Family members, fans and friends of Vinesh turned up in huge numbers in New Delhi to welcome back the wrestler who was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after being found to be overweight by 100 grams on the day of the women’s 50 kg final. Wrestler Bajrang Punia and former wrestler Sakshi Malik were among the notable people present to receive the 29 year-old.

Vinesh was due to fight Sarah Hildebrandt in the final on 7 August, but exceeding her weight by 100 grams meant that Vinesh was disqualified, and her spot in the final eventually went to Yusneylys Guzman, who had lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals.

The Haryana-born wrestler announced her retirement from wrestling on 8 August, but not before she filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) with regards to a joint-silver medal. Her appeal, however, was dismissed by the CAS on 14 August, but the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have said that they are exploring “further legal options”.

Vinesh had begun her campaign with a win over Japan’s Yui Susaki in the pre-quarterfinals. Susaki had not lost a bout to a non-Japanese opponent in 82 matches, but went down to Vinesh with a 2-3 scoreline. Vinesh then defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals, before thumping Guzman 5-0 in the semi-finals. American Sarah Hildebrandt won gold with a 3-0 win over Guzman in the final.
