The Balali-born athlete along with Aman were felicitated on returning to Jhajjar. Vinesh was also presented with a gold medal, weighing five tolas by the Haryana Sarv Khap Panchayat.

Vinesh had reached the final of the women’s 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics, where she was due to face USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt. However, on the day of the final, Vinesh was found to have been overweight by 100 grams, following which she was disqualified, with her spot going to Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman, who lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals.

Vinesh had beaten Japan’s Yui Susaki and Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the pre-quarterfinals and quarter-finals respectively.

On 7 August, the day she was disqualified, Vinesh then appealed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to be awarded a joint-silver medal, but the appeal was dismissed by the body a week later. On 8 August, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling. A tearful and heartbroken Vinesh returned to India from Paris on 17 August.
