What are Mosalu and Mameru, the pre-wedding rituals performed ahead of Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant's big day?

Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani’s son Anant Ambani is set to tie the knot with Radhika Merchant on 12th July at Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai. While the wedding is expected to be a star-studded visual spectacle, ahead of the big day, the Mosalu/Mameru ceremony took place yesterday.

What is Mosalu ceremony?

Mosalu is a traditional ceremony celebrated in Gujarati culture a few days before the actual wedding. In Mosalu, the groom’s mother’s family, in this case members from Nita Ambani’s side of the family, led by her mother Smt. Purnima Dalal and her sister Ms. Mamta Dalal, came to the residence to bless the couple along with gifts and offerings. The groom’s maternal uncles and family presented the bride & groom with a traditional set of gifts known as “Mameru.” In a way Mosalu and Mameru reflect the respect given to and involving the larger family in wedding festivities. These occasions highlight the importance of the wedding for the extended family and becomes an occasion for them to celebrate together. Smt. Nita Ambani’s family were present in large numbers for the ceremony.

Earlier, this month the distribution of wedding invites began with Nita Ambani visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to offer the first invitation and seek blessings. Talking about it, she said, “I have just got Baba Bholenath’s darshan. I am feeling very blessed… As per the Hindu tradition, we first take blessings of the Lord. I have offered the wedding invite to Baba… I am very happy. I have come here after 10 years. I am happy to see the development and Kashi Vishwanath corridor, NaMo Ghat, solar energy plants and cleanliness. I am very happy to see the change.”

On 12th July, there will be Shubh Vivah and the dress code for the wedding function will be Indian tradition. Regarding 13th July, which will be Shubh Aashirwad, or Divine Blessings, the dress code has been advised as Indian formals. The Ambani family has kept the Mangal Utsav, or wedding reception on the 14th July, and the dress code is Indian Chic.
