Indian chess sensation Divya Deshmukh was on Thursday crowned world champion in the U-20 category during the World Junior Chess Championship in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The 18-year-old International Master (IM) sealed the title after defeating Bulgarian Grand Master Beloslava Krasteva using white pieces in the final round of engagements. Deshmukh secured the top spot finishing with a total of 10 points from a possible 11, collecting her second title in a row after winning the Sharjah Challengers in May.

“I learnt to deal with pressure and how to handle it. I also learnt how to play better in general,” Deshmukh told PTI after her victory.

Deshmukh had inched closer to the title on the penultimate day of the competition after defeating Sachi Jain in 26 moves, before defeating Krasteva, who finished the tournament at the 11th place, on the final day of the tournament.

Armenia’s Mariam Mkrtchyan finished at the second spot with a total of 9.5 points with Azerbaijan’s Ayan Allahverdiyeva securing the third spot.

A total of 101 players from 27 nations participated in the event that concluded on Thursday. Deshmukh is guaranteed to finish at the top of the FIDE Ratings for junior girls after winning the tournament with an unbeaten run.
