At Reliance Industries Limited’s 47th annual general meeting, Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani unveiled ambitious plans to revolutionise AI infrastructure in India. As part of this vision, Reliance aims to create gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, powered entirely by the company’s green energy initiatives.

These data centres are set to play a crucial role in supporting Jio’s AI ambitions while also addressing the significant environmental challenges associated with the high energy consumption of AI operations.

The Jio Brain Initiative and AI Adoption
Ambani introduced the Jio Brain initiative, a comprehensive suite of AI tools and platforms designed to span the entire AI lifecycle. Jio Brain is intended to accelerate AI adoption across Jio’s vast network, driving faster decision-making, more accurate predictions, and a deeper understanding of customer needs. By leveraging these advanced AI capabilities, Jio aims to enhance its operational efficiency and deliver better services to its customers.

To streamline AI adoption, Jio is developing a comprehensive suite of tools and platforms that span the entire AI lifecycle. We call this Jio Brain.

“Jio Brain enables us to accelerate AI adoption across Jio, driving faster decisions, more accurate predictions, and better understanding of customer needs. We are also starting to use Jio Brain to drive a similar transformation across other Reliance operating companies, and to fast-track their AI journey as well,“ said Ambani.

“We plan to establish gigawatt scale AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, powered entirely by Reliance’s green energy, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and a greener future,” says Mukesh Ambani

Green Energy-Powered Data Centres: A Commitment to Sustainability
AI data centres, which power the vast computing needs of artificial intelligence, have a significant environmental impact due to their high energy consumption. These centres rely on massive amounts of electricity to run servers, manage data, and cooling equipment, contributing to increased carbon emissions. As the demand for AI grows, so does the need for more data centres, amplifying their carbon footprint.

Microsoft for example has plans to construct a nuclear power plant just to power one of its biggest data centres. Similarly, other tech companies, namely Google and Meta are scrambling to come up with ways to meet the energy requirements of their data centres, all the staying under their carbon emission goals.

Additionally, the construction and maintenance of these centres require substantial resources, further straining the environment. While some companies are investing in renewable energy sources and more efficient technologies to mitigate these effects, the rapid expansion of AI continues to raise concerns about sustainability. Balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility remains a critical challenge for the industry, as the global push for AI shows no signs of slowing down.

The creation of AI-ready data centres powered by green energy is a testament to Reliance’s commitment to sustainability and a greener future. These centres, which will be located in Jamnagar, will be equipped with the capacity to handle gigawatt-level computational power, making them some of the most advanced data centres in the world.

By relying on sustainable energy sources, Reliance aims to mitigate the environmental impact traditionally associated with data centres, which are known for their high energy consumption and carbon emissions

Considering all of this, it is truly commendable that Reliance envision a massive data centre, one that has the capacity of a gigawatt-worth of computational power, that is powered completely by sustainable energy

As the demand for AI continues to grow, so does the need for extensive data infrastructure. Many global tech giants are grappling with the challenge of meeting these energy demands while staying within their carbon emission goals. In contrast, Reliance’s approach to powering its AI-ready data centres with green energy not only addresses this challenge but also sets a new standard for the industry.

Building a National AI Infrastructure
Ambani emphasised that the true power of AI lies in making it accessible to everyone, everywhere. Through its AI Everywhere For Everyone vision, Jio is laying the groundwork for a national AI infrastructure that will democratise AI, offering powerful models and services at the most affordable prices. This initiative is expected to drive significant advancements in AI adoption across India, positioning Reliance as a leader in both technological innovation and environmental responsibility.

“True power of AI lies in making it accessible to everyone, everywhere. With Jio’s AI Everywhere For Everyone vision, we are committed to democratising AI, offering powerful AI models and services to everyone in India at the most affordable prices. To achieve this, we are laying the groundwork for a truly national AI infrastructure,” says Mukesh Ambani

The announcement of gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres powered by green energy marks a significant step in Reliance’s journey towards creating a sustainable and AI-driven future. With these initiatives, Reliance is not only enhancing its technological capabilities but also reaffirming its commitment to building a greener, more inclusive digital society.
