Apple is set to unveil its iPhone 17 Pro Max next year, and it’s shaping up to be the most advanced camera phone yet, according to prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a recent investor note on Medium, Kuo outlined significant camera upgrades for the upcoming flagship, focusing on a new triple 48-megapixel rear camera system.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to feature a cutting-edge 48-megapixel Tetraprism camera, promising superior photo quality and advanced zoom capabilities. This new camera will utilize a 1/2.6-inch 48-megapixel CIS sensor, a substantial improvement over the 1/3.1-inch 12-megapixel sensor anticipated for the iPhone 16 Pro models due to launch this year.

Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are also set to receive upgrades, including Tetraprism telephoto lenses. Previously exclusive to the larger Pro Max models, this technology will now be available in both Pro variants, offering at least 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom.

Kuo hinted that the advanced Tetraprism camera might initially be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. If so, this technology could then be extended to both iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026. The development of this upgraded camera involves designing new prisms with a shorter form factor, reducing the height of the camera module. This aligns with earlier predictions by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities.

Pu also reported that the iPhone 16 Pro models will include a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens. This would make the iPhone 17 Pro Max the first iPhone to feature an all-48-megapixel rear camera system, covering main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. In comparison, the current iPhone 15 Pro models have a mix of 48-megapixel main, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and 12-megapixel telephoto lenses.

The iPhone 16 series is expected to debut this September, continuing Apple’s tradition of September launches. With these anticipated enhancements in camera technology and other features, Apple aims to maintain its competitive edge in the smartphone market.
