The global market for artificial intelligence (AI) PCs experienced significant growth in the second quarter of 2024, according to a recent report by market research firm Canalys. During this period, over 8.8 million AI-capable computers were shipped by manufacturers, with Apple’s Mac computers dominating the market.

As the demand for AI-driven technology continues to rise, the adoption of these advanced PCs is expected to increase further in the latter half of the year, especially with the more and more OEMs launching their Qualcomm Snapdragon X chipset-equipped laptops, the report indicates that

In Q2 2024, Apple’s Macs, powered by the company’s proprietary Apple Silicon chipsets, captured a substantial 60 per cent of the AI PC market. This dominance was notably higher than the share held by Windows AI PCs, which accounted for just under 40 per cent of shipments during the same timeframe.

The strength of Apple’s position is largely attributed to the fact that all current-generation Macs come equipped with M-series chips, which are designed with AI capabilities in mind. In contrast, many Windows computers still include processors that are not specifically optimized for AI functions.

However, Apple users are expected to fully unlock the AI potential of their devices with the introduction of Apple Intelligence features, slated for release later this year or in early 2025.

While Apple led the market, Windows AI PC shipments showed impressive growth, increasing sequentially by 127 per cent. Among the manufacturers of Windows AI PCs, Lenovo’s Yoga Slim and ThinkPad laptops contributed to a 6 per cent market share, slightly trailing Dell, which holds a 7 per cent share with its Inspiron, XPS, and Latitude models.

HP outpaced both competitors, securing an 8 per cent share following the launch of its EliteBook and Omnibook Copilot+ PCs.

The report also highlights that the Snapdragon X series chipsets from Qualcomm, which are based on Arm architecture, were only introduced in June 2024. This limited timeframe meant that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had a narrow window to ship AI-capable computers powered by these new chipsets within the second quarter.

Despite this, OEMs have committed to integrating these advanced Arm chipsets into future products, which are expected to offer superior performance and efficiency compared to traditional x86 chips.

Canalys’ Principal Analyst, Ishan Dutt, emphasised that with the strong groundwork laid by recent developments, AI-capable PC shipments are poised for even greater momentum in the second half of 2024. The combination of new technologies and growing market demand suggests that the AI PC market is on the cusp of further expansion, with both Apple and Windows platforms set to play significant roles in this evolving landscape.
