Social media platform X, backed by free speech absolutist Elon Musk seems to suppressing or rather censoring Tweets by Donald Trump, a new study has found.

A recent study by Mediaite has revealed that X, the social media platform is suppressing tweets by Donald Trump. This discovery has raised questions about the platform’s approach to content moderation, particularly concerning high-profile figures like the former president.

Users seeking specific tweets from Trump may find themselves having to sift through his entire timeline.

According to a report by Mediaite, the usual method for locating tweets—searching with “from:[username]” followed by keywords — no longer works as expected for Trump’s account.

For instance, searching for Trump’s tweet where he claimed that COVID-19 cases and deaths were “far exaggerated” due to the CDC’s “ridiculous method of determination” should yield relevant results.

However, it does not. Instead, unrelated tweets appear in a haphazard fashion. This issue, observed by Mediaite, was corroborated by further testing.

Trump’s Twitter account had been suspended in 2021 after the platform determined that some of his posts violated its policies, particularly following the events of January 6, 2021. Although Trump attempted to sue Twitter to regain access, it wasn’t until Elon Musk acquired the platform that the account was reinstated.

Despite this, Trump has only posted once since his reinstatement — a mug shot from his booking related to charges that he attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.

Ironically, the apparent suppression of Trump’s tweets could inadvertently benefit him by burying some of the more controversial statements he made during the pandemic. Mediaite highlighted that it remains unclear why this is happening, especially since other previously suspended and reinstated accounts, such as Alex Jones’, remain fully searchable.

A software engineer consulted by Mediaite suggested that the move might be intentional, as the issue does not seem to affect other users in a similar situation. However, Trump’s tweets can still be accessed through external resources like the “Trump Twitter Archive,” which remains functional.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump has been a subject of discussion, particularly as rumours surfaced about Musk donating approximately $45 million per month to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

Musk later clarified in an interview with Jordan Peterson that he was not directly funding Trump but had instead established a Political Action Committee (PAC) called America Pac. PACs, particularly Super PACs, can receive unlimited donations, unlike donations to individual candidates, which are capped.

Additionally, Musk is set to host an interview with Trump on X, which will be streamed live tonight. This interview is expected to attract significant attention, further highlighting the complex relationship between Musk and Trump as the 2024 presidential race unfolds.
