Kaspersky Lab has announced that it will begin winding down its US operations next month, following a recent ban by the US Commerce Department. This decision means the company will lay off its US-based employees, marking the end of a lengthy dispute between the Russian antivirus provider and the US government.

Kaspersky, once a prominent vendor for US government agencies and a sponsor of high-profile conferences in Washington, D.C., had previously pledged to challenge the impending Commerce Department ban on its antivirus software. The ban, which prohibits new installations of Kaspersky’s antivirus software starting July 20, also stipulates that existing customers in the US will stop receiving product updates on September 29.

Journalist Kim Zetter first reported that US employees were informed about the layoffs this week. Kaspersky stated that it had thoroughly assessed the impact of the US legal requirements and concluded that continuing business in the country was no longer viable. The company emphasized its nearly 20-year history in the US, during which it contributed to national cybersecurity efforts by protecting organizations and individuals from cyber threats.

Despite the closure of its US office, Kaspersky will continue to operate outside the United States, maintaining its offices across Europe. This move comes as Kaspersky has faced increasing scrutiny from governments worldwide over its alleged ties to the Russian government. Although Kaspersky has consistently denied any involvement in cyber espionage on behalf of Moscow, concerns remain that the company could be compelled to share customer data under Russian law.

The US government had already banned Kaspersky from federal networks in 2017, a decision the company contested through legal channels. Now, the shutdown of its US operations highlights the growing challenges Kaspersky faces in maintaining its presence in the American market.

For US customers, the closure of Kaspersky’s office adds urgency to finding alternative cybersecurity solutions before the Commerce Department’s deadlines. The end of Kaspersky’s US operations signals a significant shift in the cybersecurity landscape, prompting American businesses and government agencies to seek other vendors to meet their security needs.
