Most of Apple's top AI features aren’t coming anytime soon, likely to launch by mid-2025

Apple introduced its new AI features, known as Apple Intelligence, during WWDC 2024 as part of the iOS 18 update. Despite the iOS 18 release being scheduled for September alongside the iPhone 16 series launch, these advanced AI capabilities will not be available immediately.

According to Bloomberg, the Apple Intelligence features are expected to be rolled out to eligible iPhones in the second quarter of 2024.

The first public version of iOS 18 will not be shipped with all the headlining AI features, such as the on-device image generation and other AI features. These features are only likely to become available with the release of iOS 18.4, which is likely to be launched in the first half of 2025, months after the upcoming iPhone 16 series has already hit the market.

While Apple has already released two beta updates for iOS 18, none of these included Apple’s Intelligence or Apple AI features. The company has confirmed that beta testing for Apple Intelligence will begin this fall, with some features becoming accessible early next year.

The first public version of iOS 18 is expected in the coming weeks, which should providing a more stable version, available for over 20 different iPhone models.

This beta is currently in development and is anticipated to be released as a developer beta in January 2025, followed by a public release in the spring.

In the meantime, a redesign for Siri is planned. This update will change how Siri is visually represented on the iPhone, replacing the current circle icon with a flare around the screen edges.

Additionally, ChatGPT integration with Siri is expected before the end of 2024. However, more extensive features, such as deeper integration between Siri and iOS apps, will be part of the iOS 18.4 release. This update will enhance Siri’s ability to interpret commands and perform multiple steps, like asking about a sports team and then adding the next game to a user’s calendar with a simple follow-up command.

Apple Intelligence will utilize both on-device computing and a cloud technology called Apple Private Cloud, which promises enhanced security and privacy compared to conventional AI solutions.

Apple plans to roll out these AI features incrementally, starting with simpler functionalities and gradually introducing the more complex flagship features.

In addition to iPhones, devices like iPads and Macs powered by Apple’s Silicon M series chips are also set to receive Apple Intelligence capabilities. These devices are expected to start receiving AI features by late 2024 or early 2025.

This staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence indicates that while users can expect some new AI features soon, the full suite of capabilities won’t be available until the iOS 18.4 update in 2025. This strategic approach allows Apple to ensure a smooth implementation and high-quality user experience as they integrate these advanced technologies into their devices.
