Samsung is reportedly in the midst of developing new artificial intelligence (AI) smartphones that could significantly diverge from its current offerings. This development was disclosed by TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Experience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, during an interaction with the Australian Financial Review.
According to Roh, the South Korean tech giant is heavily investing in research and development for these AI smartphones, although it remains unclear whether they will constitute a new lineup or replace the existing flagship models.
Roh highlighted that a significant portion of Samsung MX’s research and development efforts is dedicated to creating these new AI-powered devices.
While he hinted at major changes, he did not specify what these differences might entail. Speculation suggests that these changes could involve new form factors, variations in display sizes, advanced sensors, or the inclusion of dedicated neural processing units (NPUs).
Earlier this month, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 globally. Alongside hardware upgrades and a new hinge mechanism, these devices also featured new AI capabilities under the Galaxy AI umbrella.
For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 includes a “Sketch to Image” feature using the S Pen, allowing users to transform rough sketches into realistic artwork with AI assistance. Additionally, both devices now feature “Note Assist,” which can record audio, transcribe it, and provide summaries.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6, known for its clamshell design, is equipped with a new ProVisual Engine for its cameras. Powered by AI, this feature can detect objects, analyze lighting conditions, and isolate facial features to enhance image quality.
The AI capabilities also optimize images, even at a 10x zoom range, improving the overall quality of the captured objects.
