The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has initiated an antitrust investigation into NVIDIA, responding to accusations from competitors who claim that NVIDIA has misused its market position to stifle fair competition in the AI chip industry.
The investigation is exploring whether NVIDIA exerted pressure on cloud service providers to purchase a suite of NVIDIA products, over those of their competitors, if they were to continue having access to NVIDIA’s top tier of AI chips.
Sources involved in the investigation have indicated that the DoJ is examining if NVIDIA enforced such practices to maintain its market dominance, particularly in the AI chip sector.
Allegations of unfair pricing and market dominance
Another aspect of the investigation focuses on NVIDIA’s pricing strategies. There are concerns that NVIDIA may have imposed higher prices on its networking equipment if customers showed interest in purchasing AI chips from NVIDIA’s rivals, such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel.
